Fr. Tom's Tomes
Weekly Newsletter
February 7, 2010

Fr. TomThis past week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week at Bishop Hogan. Activities included our school’s annual Science Fair, aluncheon for area Realtors, meeting for our Dinner Auction on May 1, PTO meeting with pizza/beverage, and a geography bee
on Friday. Each day the students dressed up according a different theme. The children really enjoyed the theme for each day developed by the 7th and 8th graders.

Next weekend is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s reminds us of
couples and their love for each other. It is also an opportunity for us to think about the Sacrament of Marriage. Marriage is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Each person who is baptized as Catholic or is received into the Catholic Church is expected to follow the rules of marriage in the Catholic Church.

In order for one who is to be Catholic to get married in the
Catholic Church a person needs to be free to marry. This means that the person has never been married before or if they have been then the previous marriage has been annulled. Prior to getting married the couple needs to complete a marriage preparation process as outlined by the Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph. Marriage preparation includes taking a marriage preparation instrument called Prepare II, taking part in an Engaged Encounter Weekend, and taking part in a Saturday seminar called A Joy Filled Marriage.

A Catholic marriage takes place in a Catholic Church with a priest and two witnesses present. In the Catholic Church the teaching on the Sacrament of Marriage states that a couple entering marriage and during their marriage should live out the four intentions of marriage. They are:

1. Openness to having children.
2. Being faithful to one another.
3. Understanding and believing marriage can be dissolved only by death.
4. To create a loving home.

These four intentions are very important for the couple to discuss with each other prior to and during the marriage together. It is important for couples to continue to share and explore their understanding of these four principals as they are married so they may grow in love for each other.

Love is not only a feeling but a decision. Young couples seem, at times to believe that love is the emotion or feelings one feels for the other. In the Sacrament of Marriage though when challenges arrive in marriage couples must at times decide to love one another. Marriages progress easily when no challenges are present in a relationship. However when challenges come along or a couple become comfortable with each other there is a need to decide to love the other person.

Challenges do not have to be dramatic events. Take for instance couples who have been married for several years. They have become comfortable with each other and begin to take each other for granted. The ordinary routine of living may cause a couple to begin to question whether their spouse still loves them. This may be a time to make a decision to love and to renew the commitment of marriage. Or how many times have you had to pick up after your spouse? What does that individual do to irritate you? Do they do it on purpose? OR is it because they are forgetful? No matter what an individual can become irritated and question what is going on. Now is the time for the individual to make a decision to love the other person.

I would encourage all who are married to recommit yourself to your spouse during this coming week. Make and take time to spend with your spouse. Remember marriage is important not only to you but to the whole world.

God bless you this week.

MASS INTENTIONS NEEDED
An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person such as on a birthday, or as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. In the past, at St. Columban’s, we received more Mass intentions than could be said in the time period in which they must be fulfilled so we had to send them off to the missions to be fulfilled. Recently, we have fulfilled most of the Mass intentions that have been given to St. Columban’s. The stipend is $10.00. A stipend is given which creates an obligation which must be satisfied. We find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church, but we also clearly recognize its importance. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting then any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. To have a Mass offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated.

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
Another Bishop Hogan collection of food and toiletries was delivered to Heart to Heart collection this weekend for Haiti survivors. The students also donated $126.35 to Catholic Relief Services.

FOOD COLLECTION - HEART TO HEART
Bishop Hogan Memorial students sent food collected from their food drive this week to Heart to Heart Collections in Kansas City, Missouri. This food will then be sent to Haiti for the earthquake survivors. This food drive has been an on-going community service project the 5th and 6th grades started in October. The food collected weekly has been delivered to the Salvation Army and Livingston County Food Pantry all year.
Thank you for all your generosity. The food drive will continue for the remainder of the school year. If you would like to help, boxes are located by the north church door and in the vestibule. Please remember us!!!

PRINCIPAL POSITION
Bishop Hogan Memorial School seeks an enthusiastic Catholic School Principal to guide our Preschool through 8th grade program. The qualified candidate must be an active practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church, with a minimum of three years teaching experience; a Masters degree in educational administration with an administrative certificate from the State of Missouri, or the ability to obtain one. This position may include some teaching duties. This candidate must also demonstrate a strong ability to communicate, marketing and recruitment skills, and a collaborative leadership style in the mission of the Church. Applications are available by contacting the Catholic Schools Office at 816-756-1858 x274 or on the website.

BISHOP HOGAN FUND RAISER
We continue to participate in the Hy-Vee fund raiser for schools. Save your Hy-Vee receipts and deposit them in the boxes at the main entrance to Church or on the north entrance. The school earns 1% back, which usually brings in between $100 to $200 each month. The following are the simple rules:

  • Must have the Chillicothe Hy-Vee name on the receipt
  • Must be for $25.00 or more
  • Cannot have any prescriptions or fuel on the receipt

Thanks to all who help with this project!

WELCOME BACK FATHER MICHAEL DIOCHI TUESDAY, JANUARY 12

END OF YEAR STATEMENTS
Parishioners yearly contribution statements are available to be picked up on the table in the back of church.
Please disregard the Pledge History box at the bottom of the statement. In most cases, this information is
incorrect. The actual Total of Contributions is correct. This is the amount you will need for filing income taxes. The mistake is due to not deleting out the old pledges from 2007 before posting the new 2009 pledges. The total Pledge History is correct in some circumstances - if you did not pledge in 2007 - your 2009 pledge is correct. In all other instances the computations are incorrect due to the 2007 pledges being computed over a 2 year period. If you renewed your 2007 pledge by making a pledge in 2009, the computations are also wrong. We did not ask for pledges in 2008, but that year’s contributions are being calculated in the totals.

TAX-FREE IRA GIFTS
TAX FREE IRA GIFTS allowed only until December 31, 2009 Did you know that Federal law still allows tax-free charitable distributions from your IRA? Charitable taxpayers who are 70 and one-half or older can direct “qualified charitable distributions” from their fund administrator directly to the charities of their choice, including one’s parish, school or favorite ministry. Anyone with an IRA who is 70 and one-half years old or older at the time of the distribution should explore this possibility. This provision is currently scheduled to expire December 31, 2009, so there is not much time to take advantage of it. For the details, contact your legal or financial adviser or Greg Vranicar at the Office of Stewardship & Development, 1-800-246-1850 x 529 or vranicar@diocesekcsj.org.

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER
“Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Let Worldwide Marriage Encounter help your marriage/holy orders remain Christ centered. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends in Missouri are Feb. 12 - 14, 2010 in Branson and Apr. 16-18, 2010 in Kansas City. Dates fill fast, early registration is recommended. For more information visit our website at or contact Shawn & Stephanie Souders at 816-903-1988.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Rick O’Halloran
Rick O’Halloran mows and helps take care of our beautiful Mary Garden. Rick also opens the church every morning.
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Rhonda Oesch and Joe Timmons
Rhonda organized the Vacation Bible School this summer which was very successful. She organized the volunteer teachers and the events of the week. I’m sure she would agree that without the help of those volunteers, VBS would not be possible. Joe Timmons also played a part in Vacation Bible School by seeing that the children were fed every night. Joe’s volunteerism does not stop there, though. Joe is active all year long. Besides his work with the Knights of Columbus, he teaches CCD class, RCIA class, helps with the Youth Groups, is involved with the Inviting Catholics Home program. He is an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and ministers to the homebound. He also helps with maintenance around the parish and does much more - if there is a need, he is usually the first in line to help.
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:  Mary Triplett
Mary uses her creative talents to decorate the bulletin boards in the entryway of the church and at the north door. The bulletin boards are always beautiful and informative. Please take a minute to look them over as you enter and leave church. Thank you Mary for your efforts. We plan to make this a weekly feature in the bulletin.
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:  Ralph & Louise Wilson / John & Donna Sizemore
These two couples have spent countless hours working in the Mary Garden and keeping it looking beautiful. All of their hard work is greatly appreciated by not only the parish, but the community who use the garden for a backdrop for senior portraits, etc. Please keep in mind that more help from the parish is needed during the growing season to pull weeds and keep the plants under control.
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:  Delores Devaul
Delores is whom we call when a funeral is being held at St. Columban’s and the family would like a dinner after the burial. She organizes the ladies to serve the meal and calls to parishioners for donated dishes.
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: John & Mary Taylor
John and Mary have been in charge of the parish Confirmation Classes for many years. They also help coordinate the High School Youth activities. These are but only two of their volunteer specialties, John serves on the Parish Council and takes Communion to shut ins and Mary is active in pro-life and the Respect Life Group. John and Mary help with many things around the parish from work nights to driving on school field trips. They are always ready to do what they can to make St. Columban’s an active parish. Thank you John and Mary for ALL that you do!
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Alice Van Dyke
Alice has helped in about every capacity in the school for many, many years. She has done everything from office work to classroom aide to cafeteria helper. Alice is also active in the community with Church Women United and has coordinated the Mobile Meals for our parish in the past. Within the parish, Alice
begins the prayer chain and is Eucharistic Minister for Mass and to the shut ins. We have probably left something out, and for that we are sorry, but we would like to let Alice know that we truly appreciate all of her help around the parish!
  • VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Music Ministry
This week we recognize our music ministry of the parish which is led by our school music teacher, Mary Garr, and long-time organist, Brenda Lauhoff. So many times we hear the beautiful voices praising God and wonder who is the face behind the voice. Louise Tate and Brenda Fellhoelter lend their voices to lead us at Mass and Marla Laidler gives us her musical ability playing the keyboard. A variety of people have made up the choir over the last year and we hope we haven’t left anyone out! Our choir in addition to those mentioned above: Brenda O’Halloran, Lanie Beetsma, Mary Louise Haynes, Scott, Stephanie and Chelsea Wade, Ryan Colter, Jerry Davis, Daniel Alford.

ST. ANN’S ALTAR SOCIETY met on Thursday, December 10 at noon in the Knights of Columbus Hall.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE
The Respect Life Committee met on Monday, February 1st at 5:30 pm in the church library. Discussion was held in regards to the white crosses project to represent the amount of abortions that are performed in the United States. We will need approximately 350 crosses and the cost is about $5.00 per cross. Craig Myers is in charge of this project and any person interested in helping can contact Craig at 247-0996. Janet Schreiner organized the Christmas flower gifts. These were delivered by Eucharistic Ministers who distribute the Holy Eucharist to people in their homes. The Good Samaritan and Welcoming Committee programs have been set up. March for Life was held in Washington, DC with about 350,000 people marching for life and the repeal of Roe vs Wade. This was the largest crowd to ever participate in the March for Life and also the largest crowd to march in Washington, DC. In the month of May, the Respect Life Committee will look into having a baby
shower in which all donations are given to Birthright. Respect Life meetings are held once a month and are open to anyone in our parish.

GOOD SAMARITAN COMMITTEE
This new parish ministry group will visit the serious and terminally ill, stay with the person for 2 to 3 hours at a time to give the family some time away. The visit would consist of conversing, reading to the person, praying with the person and whatever the person would prefer. No health care would be given. The family member will leave the name and phone number of a person to reach in case of emergency or needed contact. No medications will be given by the Good Samaritan member. All information including diagnosis is strictly confidential. The Good Samaritan will be respectful and treat the patient with dignity and a caring attitude. Barb Tomasek is chairman of this committee and Bev Thompson is co-chair. Others currently on the committee are Vince Wolf, Jeanne Hinkebein, Peggy Stottlemyre, Rose Smith, Janet Schreiner, Sheila Ealey, Craig Myers. For more information or to volunteer, contact Barb at 707-1050 or Bev at 646-1359.

CHOOSE LIFE
A 2008 federal law will give new or expectant parents the latest information about Down Syndrome or other disabilities, give referrals to support services, and help create a national registry to connect parents with Down Syndrome children. A measure of how necessary this law is lies in the statistic that 90% of parents who are told their unborn child has Down Syndrome choose to abort the child. (NRL News, 2/09)

KNIGHTS NEWS
The Knights opened their February meeting with 21 members including Father Tom and DD Steve Tate. A rosary to end abortion was said. Items discussed were: The Free Throw Shoot was held Jan 30 and parish winners were Jalynn Reeter, Nate McKiddy, Jared Lauhoff, and Peyton Moritz. They, along with 3 other winners will go on to regionals in Kearney on Feb 21. Good luck winners. Four Knights took their 2nd & 3rd Degree at Conception Abbey on Jan 31. They were Paul Ealey, Ryan Colter, Terry McKiddy, and Jeff Frampton. Congratulations guys. It was voted on to donate $50 to the Agape House for the prison. The Superbowl ribs sales will be the weekend of Feb 6 & 7. We will cook another 360 slabs. Thanks to all who helped and bought the ribs. For the 2nd time in 4 months, had Tyler Jeschke been at the meeting, he would have the $500 drawing. (Tyler, you might think about coming to the next meeting!)

PARISH COUNCIL met on Monday, Sept. 21. Father Tom led the six members in prayer which was followed by discussion about volunteers list. A new survey will be presented at the same time as the parish and Diocesan Appeal take place. A Diocesan program regarding wills was discussed. Respect Life Weekend is Oct 3 & 4 and the rosary and Respect for Life Prayer will be said before each Mass that weekend. 18 students from the parish recently attended a high school picnic.

Want to Help Your Parish?
St. Columban Church is seeking to add members to it’s current parish council. If you are interested please contact Father Tom at the church or school, or write a letter stating your intentions. The parish council normally meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are usually one hour.

OKTOBERFEST
Our Annual Fall Festival was held October 4, 2009. THANK YOU - What a great Octoberfest weekend we had! The weather could not have been any better. It was good to see so many people sharing in the friendship and fun. We owe thanks to God for the beautiful weather and all those who made Octoberfest possible. Thank you for the donations, the cakes and pies, the crews that set up and tore down, the extra financial help, and the volunteers. We especially thank all the parishioners and members of the Chillicothe community and surrounding areas that attended the Octoberfest events. We are blessed to be part of such a generous church family. -- The Octoberfest Committee

FUNDRAISING AMOUNTS

BISHOP HOGAN ACCREDITATION
On Thursday, September 24, 2009, Pat Burbach, Sue Koehler, and Judy Marsh visited Bishop Hogan for their Accreditation Visit. During this visit the goal was to review the information provided from an extensive review of the school which took place over the last 4 years. Bishop Hogan has been accredited by Missouri Non-Public Schools Accreditation Association as well as AdvancEd formally known as North Central Accreditation. In their review process the team said Bishop Hogan has great children. They were very impressed with the great students we have.

Under the commendations listed by the visiting Accrediting Team were:

  • Bishop Hogan clearly carries out its mission of creating caring, responsible, knowledgeable, youth through a strong religious and academic educational curriculum. Parents, teachers, and students echoed the fact the Bishop Hogan students went on be successful in High School and in the community. They commented on the fact that these students stand out in leadership, academic and athletic roles which require responsibility.
  • Students, parents and teachers focused on prayer and the Catholic Faith as an important strength of their school. This active faith life is evident from Pre-K through 8th grade.
  • Bishop Hogan fulfills the mission and philosophy of the school in that it is establishing the foundation for Catholic and moral development that will continue throughout the students lives.
  • The current staff is authentically committed to professional growth as seen in a readiness to embrace new methods, materials, and technology.
  • The staff also shows an encompassing knowledge and understanding of multi-age grouping with the management and organizational skill to meet all grade level goals and expectations.
  • The school is to be commended for the strong Early Learning Center which acts as a feeder to the Elementary program. A sense of community has been built to promote Pre k through 8th grade education.

Through these commendations the Accreditation Team has seen the tremendous effort put forth by the teachers of Bishop Hogan. Strong, committed teachers forming the minds, hearts and souls of students who will be the future leaders of our Church and Country.

ALERT: HEALTHCARE REFORM AND ABORTION FUNDING
Congress is still working on health care reform. Unless abortion funding is specifically excluded, it will be allowed and funding would be greatly expanded. Please call or write your Representative and Senators and tell them that you do not want the health care reform bill to fund abortions. Contact information:

  • US Sen. Claire McCaskill, 202-224-6154, Hart Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20510
  • US Sen. Christopher Bond, 202-224-5721, Russell Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20510
  • US Rep. Sam Graves, 202-225-7041, 1415 Longworth House Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20515

SAVE LABELS
Please continue to collect the following labels. Put them in the Harvest Baskets in the front and back of church. We save: Campbell’s soup, Franco-American, Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, Market Day, Prego, V8, V8 Splash, V8 Fusion, Campbell’s Supper Bakes. Thanks for helping Bishop Hogan.

CEMETERY DONATIONS
Donations for cemetery upkeep are taken every year during the Memorial Day Weekend. We also have added a Memorial Day Cemetery Upkeep envelope in the packets this year. Our only source of income is through donations and the sale of lots, which we keep at a minimum for active parishioners. Our expenses are mowing, lights, road maintenance and other upkeep. This summer we would like to have the funds to repair some of the older monument stones that have fallen over. Many of these no longer have family living to maintain them.

CEMETERY NOTICE - St. Columban Cemetery is not a perpetual care cemetery and St. Columban Church does not maintain, finance, or contribute to the cemetery in anyway. In order to maintain the roads, mow the grass, trim the trees, and keep the cemetery maintained we must depend on donations and volunteer help. The Cemetery Board has a contract with Moore Monument Company to repair all the fallen and damaged headstones in the cemetery. We have a contract with the Chillicothe street department to repair and gravel the roads. We are trying to renovate the cemetery and need help from parishioners and family members of those who are buried in the cemetery to accomplish this task. Please help us by making a donation to the St. Columban Cemetery, drop your check in the collection basket on Sunday or leave it at the Rectory.

St. Columban Cemetery Association Board Members: Don Murrell, David Link, Craig Myers, Agnes Miller, Mary Catherine Damm, Kevin Jeschke, Mike Miller, Jarrod Marshall

THANK YOU
St. Columban Cemetery Board would like to thank Ben Koehly, Koehly Electric for donating an electronic timer, wire, and materials for the security lights. We would also like to thank Rex Marshall, North Missouri Construction for donating the manpower and equipment to bury the electrical wire for the security lights. Last, but not least, thank you Richard Myers for wiring the security lights. The St. Columban Cemetery Board and the parish thank you all for your contribution to improve the cemetery. The Cemetery Board has contracted Moore Monument Company to repair fallen and damaged headstones of those who no longer have family to take care of the graves. If anyone would like to donate to the repair of these stones, leave your gift at the rectory or drop it in the collection basket on Sunday, marked specifically for Cemetery. Make the check payable to St. Columban Cemetery.

A YEAR FOR PRIESTS BEGINS
A year to develop spiritual perfection - Pope Benedict XVI has declared the Church will observe a year for priests from June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010. The purpose of the jubilee year, the pontiff said in a March 16
speech, is simple, yet challenging: “To encourage priests in this striving for spiritual perfection on which, above all, the effectiveness of their ministry depends.” “Striving for spiritual perfection.” Especially today, when the Church is facing a priestly shortage and priests must take on additional duties beyond ministering to their flocks, all Catholics must hold up their priests and those who are discerning the call to the priesthood in prayer and support the vital work they do. After all, as Pope Benedict pointed out, without the ministerial
priesthood, “there would be neither the Eucharist, nor even the mission nor the Church herself.” And while praying for our priests, including bishops and the pope himself, the lay faithful should remember that they are all called to participate with ordained leaders in joining themselves in the sacrifice of Christ, and that they, too, should embark on the quest for spiritual perfection.

ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE
We are sending 30 parishioners, accompanied by Father Tom to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 37th Annual March on Washington in defense of the sanctity of life and to overturn Roe v Wade that legalized abortion in our country. The pilgrims are 7th and 8th graders from the parish, high school students and several adults. They will join tens of thousands of others from across the nation. If you have never been, the sight is awe inspiring and if you possibly can, plan on attending next year. Our parish is very fortunate to make it possible to have this opportunity to attend. Our pilgrimage will begin at 6:30 am on Wednesday, Jan.
20, boarding the Trailways bus that will be our home for the next 24 hour ride to Washington only making stops at truck stops to get refreshments and stretch our legs. We will stop along the way for supper and sleep on the bus. Thursday, Jan. 21, we will arrive in D.C. and attend a 9:00 am Mass at the impressive National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Lunch will be at Union Station and the afternoon will be spent visiting the monuments, Arlington Cemetery and other sight-seeing. The kids will love eating supper at Hard Rock Cafe. Tonight we get to sleep in a bed and take a shower at the Hampton Inn. On Friday, Jan. 22 we will be off to the Washington Mall in the shadow of the Washington Monument to assemble for the March for Life and get a chance to listen to the many speakers in defense of life including congressmen and women and religious leaders from many walks of life. After a soul-stirring hymn of God Bless America, we begin our March to the Supreme Court building. We will see many signs and banners and hear chants, prayers and rosaries prayed along the route. We will end by having supper at Union Station and boarding the bus for our journey back home. When we get back to St. Columban’s on Saturday evening, Father Tom will celebrate Mass so we can sleep in on Sunday morning and be ready for work and school on Monday. EWTN always carries live coverage of the March, so you might see us. Please, keep us in your prayers this week.

PRAYER CHAIN REVISION
It’s been a few years since we last revised our parish prayer chain. This is a parish ministry that only asks that you add a few special intentions to your daily prayer time and pass the phone call on to someone else on the prayer chain.

ST. COLUMBAN PARISH MISSION FEBRUARY 14-19, 2009
This was conducted by the Fathers of Mercy (USA) Father Anthony Stephens, C.P.M. The Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy was founded in 1808, originally under the title of “the Missionaries of France.” The community was founded for the purpose of re-evangelizing the French people after the Catholic Faith had been subjected to years of attacks and persecution during the French Revolution. It is now an exclusively American community, headquartered in South Union, Kentucky. The primary apostolate of the Fathers of Mercy is to conduct parish missions and retreats in an effort to re-evangelize and revitalize the faith of those who hear. During the mission, Fr. Tony will challenge the parish community to make a stronger, deeper personal commitment to Christ and His Church. Among the topics he will usually speak on are: the importance of the Church in our lives, the Holy Eucharist, the Mercy of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints, and the power of Prayer.

HY-VEE RECEIPTS
Thank you for saving your receipts throughout the year. This is an almost effortless way to raise money for our school. We received a check for $2,694.22 this week from Hy-Vee for last year’s receipts. We would like to thank Jeanne Hinkebein for collecting the receipts, counting and organizing them and taking them to Hy-Vee. She must check each receipt to make sure that there is not any charges on the ticket for pharmacy or gas, which disqualifies that receipt. Please continue to save your Chillicothe Hy-Vee receipts and place in the box in the church entryway.

Confirmation Class is the 3rd Sunday of the month in the Early Learning Center at 6:30 p.m.

ENDOWMENT MEMORIAL
We recently received a memorial that has been credited to the Educational Endowment. Marilyn Brennan Reich, lovingly remembers her brothers and sister, Raymond Brennan, Jr., Robert Brennan, and Margaret Brennan Berry. The Brennan children grew up in St. Columban Parish and attended school here. Their father was long-time medical doctor, Dr. Brennan. Thank you, Mrs. Marilyn Reich.

NOTICE
It has been brought to our attention that the candle holders the children made in Vacation Bible School and brought home are made from a material that can possibly catch fire. Please do not burn candles in these candle holders.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is a privilege we have been blessed to have in our parish. It is a time of many blessings. Due to busy schedules many are only able to keep their designated time. When one does not keep their commitment others are obligated to stay beyond their time or in some cases must leave the Blessed Sacrament alone. Please be considerate of others and call someone to keep your time or call others in your time slot to be sure someone will represent you during your commitment. Please mark your calendars. Schedules are always on both bulletin boards with names, times, and phone numbers available. Thanks, Mary/

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND GLOBAL LIVING ROSARY
An exciting event will be coming to our diocese next spring! On Sunday, May 25, 2008, the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas will sponsor an afternoon of Eucharistic Adoration and Global Living Rosary to be held in front of thousands of people at Royals Stadium. There will be no admission charge and no parking fee for the event, so it is hoped that as many parishioners as possible will take advantage of this event. Busses are already being scheduled. The family rosary will also be stressed in this year long devotion.

HATS AND SCARVES FOR THE HOMELESS
Parishioner and PTO President Kristie Cross has started a project that sends knitted hats and scarves to homeless shelters across the nation. FIRST FRIDAY ADORERS NEEDED
We are very fortunate in our parish to have the opportunity to adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament through Eucharistic Adoration every First Friday. We have been doing this in our parish for eleven years. During this time several of our original participants have passed away so there is a need to fill several places. When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, someone must be in the church at all times. If you can spend half an hour or
longer praying during any of the following times, please contact Kim at the office or Mary Triplett, 646-0326.
12:30-1:00, 1:00-1:30, 3:00-3:30, 3:30-4:00, 4:30-5:00.

Y-PAL PROGRAM
Your YMCA is looking for a few good men - and women! We have more young people needing mentors through our Y-Pal program than we have caring individuals to serve as surrogate parents for a few hours a month. We hope that some of your church members will jump at the chance to help a young person in Livingston County! Please call Genie Amen at 646-6677 for further information on this worthwhile cause. You’ll gain even more than your Y-Pal does from the association!

HARVEST BASKET
Thanks to all for your great response regarding putting change in the Harvest Basket. Louise Wilson kindly gets the money after Sunday Mass and brings it to me in a little purse we use. Mildred Saale

SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS - THEY MAKE THE BULLETIN POSSIBLE EVERY WEEK
We are going to be printing a large run of bulletin backs next week. If there are any businesses that would like to advertise and help support our bulletin, please contact Kim in the office, 646-0190, this week. We have 4 empty spaces available.

BISHOP HOGAN PRESCHOOL
Faith! What does it encompass? The past week of Catholic Schools Week was such a special time for all Bishop Hogan students. We talked about having the opportunity of going to a Catholic school and the special opportunities we had each day. Going to a Catholic school gives us the opportunity to pray to God, go to Mass, learn about God at Religion time, and be around other friends that feel the same way we do. We are very fortunate that we can go to school each day and feel God’s presence in our building and in everything we do. Our faith is a precious item and the pre-K children have talked about their faith each day and it is very evident in our circle/prayer time each day. Talking to God is a special and favorite time of our day and as their teacher I can tell you that their faith grows each and every day. We have an excellent place here at the ELC to learn and grow and with God’s help and our faith, we will open up the infant and toddler room again in the future. This, too, is where our faith comes in. Having faith that God will open our doors to youngsters in the community that need a safe, fun, and loving place to be where they can learn of God’s love for them. We do still have daycare for those that need care after preschool. Preschool hours from 8:00 to 11:30 and then from 12:00 to 1:30 and then rest time. So, if you know of anyone needing a great place to learn about God and God’s love for them along with those needed preschool activities, then have them call. Our ages are from 3 years up to kindergarten age. The preschoolers thank St. Columban’s parish for the opportunity you give us each day in coming to a safe, faith filled place to grow and learn. God’s blessings to each of you. Mrs. Luzader and the preschool class

WEDDING POLICY
Now in effect. No wedding dates will be set on the church calendar until the couple meets with Father Tom, in person. The policy of our Diocese is that there must be a nine month waiting period during which time marriage preparation takes place. The nine month period begins with the personal meeting with the pastor. Holy Matrimony in a sacrament and as with any sacrament, there is a time of preparation.

NEW DEACON FORMATION
Diaconate Information Meetings are being scheduled around the diocese. These meetings are for any interested persons, including perspective diaconal applicants. Anyone who wishes to apply for diaconate formation (and his spouse, if married) must attend one of these meetings. At these meetings, members of the Diaconate Committee and deacons and wives will share information about who a deacon is and what a deacon does. There will be information about the new Formation process, as well as time for questions and answers. Written materials about diaconate and the application process will be available.

Please consider the following information in deciding whether you or someone you might recommend should attend an Information Session.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A DEACON?
The deacon is called personally and by the Church to serve after the manner of Jesus the Servant. He is first and foremost a Christian man in his usual employment and lifestyle, trained and formed by additional study and prayer for a special ministry to the community as an ordained minister. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops and Diocesan Bishop set criteria for suitable deacon candidates. Here are some of the more common considerations.

  • Age: A minimum of 35 and maximum of 62 at the time of ordination (in effect, formation must begin no earlier than age 30 and no later than age 57).
  • Status: A Roman Catholic, married or single, of sound moral character, mature faith, possessing a sense of vocation to service and experienced in works of charity and justice. Must be a Catholic for at least five years before applying for diaconate formation.
  • Family: If married, a partner in a stable, Church-recognized marriage for at least seven years before applying for diaconate formation. He must have the expressed consent and support of his wife. If single, willing to commit to a celibate life.
  • Natural Gifts: Demonstrates the potential to develop ministerial skills of relating to people, speaking well, and being a leader.
  • Spiritual Gifts: A person of prayer willing to make personal sacrifices to be a consecrated sign of God’s love for others in his vocation to serve.
  • Employment: A person who reflects stability in career or work.
  • Church/community Involvement: A person living the Christian life, an active member of a parish , who has demonstrated a commitment to service, apostolic involvement, and leadership in the community and among the people of God.
  • Formation: Be able to successfully complete a five-year formation program held one full weekend each month and be able to participate in retreats and ministry practicums.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
ATTENTION: to those that participate in the First Friday Eucharistic Adoration. A new schedule with names and phone numbers is available in the back of church. Please pick up a copy and take it home with you. As you know, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration, someone must be in the church at all times. When someone does not show up, the person who has the previous time slot is left to remain and fill in the absent person’s time. This is unfair to the devoted person that keeps his or her appointed time. If you are unable to attend at the time appointed, use the phone list to call someone to trade a time with you. Thank you to all those that have committed to Eucharistic Adoration. There is great spiritual benefit to parishes that participate in this worthy devotion to Our Lord. SIGN UP for Eucharistic Adoration by calling Mary Triplett at 646-0326.

BIRTHRIGHT is an interdenominational organization that is totally in support for life. In over two years, the local Birthright center has counseled over 150 women in Livingston and four surrounding counties. The Center is developing parenting lessons and establishing a storeroom full of baby supplies to give to women needing help. The local Birthright is very blessed since many parishioners have donated money monthly in support of Birthright. We thank you and ask that you continue with your help. The current goal for the local Birthright is to have a permanent location. The Center has already received some grant monies toward this goal but there is still a need for more funds. We are appealing to people in the local and surrounding churches to consider giving tax-free donations for the building fund. If you would like to donate, your check can be sent to Birthright, 214 Cherry St., P.O. Box 303, Chillicothe, MO 64601 thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

VOLUNTEERS
Our church delivers meals from the Senior Center on Fridays every week. Thanks to Ruth Trager, Delbert Thompson, and Emily Fellhoelter for filling in whenever I need help. More volunteers are needed, if interested in helping to deliver meals call Alice VanDyke at 646-1487.

NOTICE
The Sow the Seed....Continue the Legacy pledge envelopes have been replaced with Parish Property Maintenance envelopes. The Sow the Seed pledge drive came to an end in March of 2005. Thank you to everyone that made an effort to complete your pledge. To help insure that we are financially capable of performing the proper upkeep and maintenance of the parish buildings, we hope that you will consider making periodic donations to the Property Maintenance Fund in addition to your regular church offering.

Please use your contribution envelopes and mark the amount contributed on the outside. Also, we can only insure that checks made out to Birthright and placed in the blue envelope will be forwarded to Birthright. We have a team of money counters and two are scheduled each Sunday to count and deposit the Sunday contributions. On Monday morning the bookkeeper has only the envelopes to post to the proper contributor. This is why it is so important to use the proper envelope and make sure you write in the amount. The bookkeeper never sees the actual check. The accuracy of end of year contribution statements depends on the accuracy of the envelopes.

FOSTER FAMILIES NEEDED
Catholic Charities is seeking people who are interested in making a difference in the life of a child. The children we serve have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph needs foster families to offer a safe haven for these children, especially in the St. Joseph area. Training and support are provided. If you are interested please contact Barb Shupe at 888-629-2886 ext. 26.

JOB SQUAD

Have you filled out your response card for the St. Columban Job Squad? What is the Job Squad? This is a group of volunteers which will meet about once a month to help with different projects around the Church, Rectory and School buildings. It will help with clean up of areas to fixing things which are broken. If you would like to help with the Job Squad please call the parish office and leave your name and telephone number. This is a great way for you to assist the parish, make a difference in the lives of others and meet new friends.
