Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. The scripture readings of Ash Wednesday call us to pray, fast and give alms during this season. Deacon Jerry last Sunday in his homily said: “The world we walk, however small, is heavy with hurt–some of it obvious, much of it veiled from sight. Why not make Lent a search for others’ hurt. The search is subtle, complex, Christ like. Ask God for increased sensitivity to those needs and moods. Don’t be put off by a forbidding face; we all look like that at times. Above all, we must be present to another with our whole self, heart and spirit.” The disciplines of Lent give us an opportunity to become more aware of the presence of God in our lives as well as the needs of others. When we discipline our bodies away from all of the pleasures of this world we open ourselves to the needs of others. As Deacon Jerry said, this is a season to recognize the hurt of others. It is a season to bring the hope of God to others. During the season of Lent we will have Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 2:15 pm and again at 7:00 pm. There will be a simple meatless soup and bread supper on Friday nights during Lent in the cafeteria at 6:00 pm. St. Columban’s Communal Lenten Penance Service will be at 6:30 pm on Monday of Holy Week. Please set this time aside to prepare for the Feast of Easter. The priest of the Deanery will be here to assist in hearing confessions at this Reconciliation Service. God bless you this week. |
