Fr. Tom's Tomes April 6, 2008

This Saturday the Confirmation group met for a retreat on Saturday. During the 5:30 pm Mass they participated in the Rite of Acceptance where on behalf of the people of St. Columban I welcomed them into the preparation for Confirmation. Confirmation is the sacrament where we receive the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation completes the three sacraments of initiation for Catholics into the Church. All adult Catholics should have received the sacrament of Confirmation. We take this opportunity to welcome the 24 candidates of our parish to the second part of the process of preparing for Confirmation.

Next Saturday evening, April 12, 2008 the 5th Annual Bishop Hogan Dinner Auction will be held in the gym. Parishioners are invited to come and take part in the dinner and silent and oral auctions. There are still opportunities to buy individual dinner tickets for $8.00 each. You can buy these dinner tickets either through the school or parish office. Come and join us for the silent and oral auctions. The silent auctions begin at 5:00 pm and the oral auction begins at 7:30 pm. This event is for individuals over the age of 21. No minors will be allowed to participate in the festivities of the evening. If you would like to donate something for the silent or oral auctions please contact the school office.

There will not be school on Friday, April 11, 2008 as the teachers will be having an in service day preparing for next school year. They will be looking at goals for the coming school year. If you know of someone who is interested in attending Bishop Hogan School for the 2008-2009 School year now is the time to register.

I want to thank all those who have contributed to updating the girls and boys bathrooms in the school. At this time I am working to coordinate this effort so the work can be accomplished as efficiently as possible. We have been in contact with a company to redo the floors and would like to have this part of the project done shortly after the Altar Society has their Salad Luncheon the last Thursday in May. A couple of parishioners have said they will donate the labor to install the new plumbing fixtures. We will be ordering the plumbing supplies through Chillicothe Plumbing Supply. Before the work begins on the floor we would like to install new lights and paint the bathrooms. Thank you to the many people who have donated towards this project. As we get more accurate bids we will continue to update you on the progress of the bathroom renovations.

We will continue to work to improve the appearance of our church property. Last week the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles talked about the early Church community owning everything in common. Our parish property and buildings are for all the ministries we have in our parish. It takes a lot of people to continue to make our church property look nice. We will be planting grass in the area between the school and the early learning center building. We have made some changes in front of the gym to place plants and rocks between the gym and the sidewalk which runs in front of the gym. The hope is these plants will grow and give a gentler view of the east side of the school building. If you would like to help with keeping our property looking nice please call the parish office and leave a message for Fr. Tom.

God bless you and have a blessed week.
