Fr. Tom's Tomes August 7, 2005

Last week in my homily I mentioned that I would like to start a new organization in the parish called the job squad. The job squad is a group of individuals from the parish who will be willing to help with the custodial and maintenance needs of the parish. I would like for this group to meet twice a month at the beginning on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. At least for the time being we would see if this will work out. This group would be under the direction of the pastor and would do little jobs around the church property to continue to maintain and beautify the property. Any man or woman of the parish who would like to help out is invited to come and join the job squad. If for some reason you may not be able to make it at one time or another don’t worry about it.

At the bottom of this column will be a short information slip I would ask you to return to the parish office. This will help to assist me in figuring out who will be able to help and what kinds of things we will be able to accomplish. You do not need to be a skilled laborer in order to help with the job squad.

This week Tuesday is the registration for Bishop Hogan School. Our parish provides for a Catholic School to continue to assist parents in their duty to bring their children up in the practice of the faith. From the enrollment figures I have there is still room for your child to come and sign up for the coming year.

This year Bishop Hogan will begin some classrooms which will be multi aged classrooms. I get the feeling some may be a little uneasy with the transition. For the last 13 years I pastored a parish in which the school was all multi aged classroom. It does work. The children from multi aged classrooms are well prepared to attend high school. The children from the last school I pastored were well prepared for high school. Many of the children graduating from the catholic school were in the top 10% of their graduating high school class. Children are able to learn well in a multi aged classroom setting. Those who attended the Catholic grade school were well received by the high school teaching staff.

If you as a parent are choosing not to send your child or children to our parish Catholic School then they do need to attend religion classes or CCD classes this Fall. I would hope every child of the parish is enrolled in religious education to learn their faith and to share their faith with children of our parish.

Our parish Early Learning Center is also accepting children for the early learning program of the parish. The Early Learning Center has openings for children from 6 weeks through kindergarten age. They also provide for after school care, so if you are working there is a safe place for your child to stay.

God bless you and have a good week.
