Fr. Tom's Tomes August 8, 2010

The summer has flown by and school is just about ready to begin. Teachers will be returning on Thursday, August 12, 2010 for meetings on Thursday and Friday.

On Monday, August 16, 2010 the teachers from all of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese will be celebrating Mass with Bishop Finn at St. Therese in Parkville, Mo.

On Tuesday, August 17, 2010 Bishop Hogan School will begin at 8:00 am in the morning for the 2010-2011 school year. Registration for school will be on Thursday evening, August 12, 2010 beginning at 6:00 pm in the school cafeteria. This is the time to fill out all of the enrollment papers for this coming school year. Parents are encouraged to set aside time on Thursday evening to fill out the paper work so that all this information is ready for the school teachers and office on the first morning of classes on August 17, 2010.

There was not enough time this summer to complete all of the projects around the school. There was a short school board meeting; and during the meeting, I asked the members if we could get some help to do some outside work for safety of the children. We need to find some top soil or good dirt to place around the new sidewalk to the tennis court where the children play, we need to have wood chips for the playground (tree branches which are chipped up are not suitable since they are not of the same size and contain other kinds of debris in their mixture), and then a final cleaning of the bathrooms and windows in the buildings.

Over the summer the asbestos floor tile in the south side of the rooms have been removed and new floor tile matching the existing floor tile in the cafeteria and hallway have been installed. In the Early Childhood Center we have repaired the boys bathroom on the second floor of the building by replacing one of the toilets, repairing the floor in the bathroom and installing a new floor.

Much work has been accomplished on the computer lab and computers in the classrooms. Also we found the windows in the computer lab were leaking water so we had to install new windows and the lower part of the wall was repaired. Hopefully, the new computer network wiring will take care of the computer problems we have experienced in the past.

We have stripped the old wax off of the floors and have recoated the floors with new wax. In addition to these larger items smaller things were also accomplished.

This Sunday night August 8, 2010 the Squires will be holding their monthly meeting. Since most of the Squires were out of town last Sunday evening the decision was made to hold the monthly meeting this Sunday evening. Please, if you are a Squire plan on attending this meeting at the K of C Hall.

As we come to the middle of the month of August, all Senior High youth are encouraged to watch the bulletin for information concerning Senior High events. On the second and fourth Sunday nights of the month at 6:30 pm there will be religion classes for 9th and 10th graders and those interested in being Confirmed this year. On the third Sunday night of the month there will be an activity for all Senior High youth of the parish. The third Sunday night of the month is intended to bring all High School youth together for fellowship or a service project. It will be our goal to keep parents and youth current on the events of the Senior High youth. Please pick up a copy of the bulletin after Mass on Sunday or go the parish website for the information concerning the youth.

I tried this previously and had some success, and so this Fall I am going to try to have a religion time for 11th and 12th graders for about an hour on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. The time after the 10 am Mass on Sunday provides for the youth to attend Mass and then stay for discussion and learning about the Catholic faith. Last time when we tried this we did a scripture study approach. This year I think we will alternate what type of sessions will be provided. The Diocesan plan is that all students of the parish from Pre K through 12th grade have opportunities and are attending religious education in our parish.

On Saturday, August 14, 2010 there will be a retreat day for all High School Students of the parish. This is the Saturday immediately preceding the opening of the school. This year the retreat will begin at 10am in the morning and end at 10:00 pm that evening. Please see the article in this bulletin explaining the information for next Saturday's event. All 9th and 10th graders are to attend this retreat as it is part of the program for 9th and 10th graders.

We are still waiting to demolish the apartment building on the southwest corner of the block our school sets on. It appears AT&T has a junction box adjacent to the building which needs to be removed before the building can be torn down. If we would in some way disturb the wiring we would become responsible to repair the wiring which might turn out to be a very expensive endeavor. I invite you to say a prayer this issue can be resolved quickly so the building can be torn down.

God bless you have this week.
