Tom's Tomes August 13, 2006
Bishop Hogan Memorial School begins on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 8:00 am. School will be in session on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until 1:00 pm. Lunch will be served on these three days of school. Children will not be attending Mass on the first day of school but will be attending Mass at 8:15 am on Friday, August 18, 2006. The teachers for Bishop Hogan began working this past Thursday morning in preparation for the first day of school. Teachers for this year are Karen Overton for K, Mary Burnett for 1st and 2nd, Marty Rogers for 3rd and 4th, Charlene Thompson for 5th and 6th, Brian Murrell for 7th and 8th, Mary Garr for music and computers and Angie Bonderer for PE. The support staff for the school includes Misty Burnett for school secretary, Janet Lauhoff and Paula McCoy are cooking for the school, Joe Darr as the custodian/maintenance person and Alice VanDyke as school office volunteer. With the beginning of the school year our weekday Mass schedule will change beginning on Monday, August 14, 2006. We will return to the Fall schedule for weekday Masses which is: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30 am and Wednesday and Friday at 8:15 am. I would ask all parishioners to continue to watch the front of the bulletin for any changes in the Mass schedule. There will be times I will have to be at meetings beginning at 8:30 am in Kansas City and on those types of days I hope to have a communion service instead of a Mass. Since I have laid out this information so neatly this week we already have a change in the Mass times. Tuesday, August 25, 2006 is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. This is a holy day of obligation. No one should exclude themselves from attending Mass for Tuesday. Masses at St. Columban for the Assumption of Mary will be 7:00 pm on Monday, August 14, 2006, 8:00 am and 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2006. With the schedule for the holy day everyone should be able to attend Mass. This past week I attended training workshops in Kansas City to implement child safety protection into our CCD program, Senior High Program, and into the curriculum for the Catholic Schools. Some of the materials needed for the implementation of this program are present and others are not. When all of the material comes we will train the teachers who are presenting the material, have a parent session for all parents and then begin the training with the children of our parish. This program will include training for all kinds of safety issues as well as a substantial amount of lessons to help children recognize what to do in the event someone is attempting to abuse them. The materials I saw were very well developed. The materials are age appropriate for the children. The Diocese is asking this program to be implemented and used into the future. This is not just a one year effort but will be part of our ongoing religious education in our parish. As more information becomes available I will hopefully keep everyone updated on the process as we proceed. This weekend there are forms at the entrances of our church for registration for religious education. This information I am asking you to fill out and return to the parish office. If you would be interested in assisting with teaching or helping with the religious education process please let me know. Some of the teachers from last year CCD I have contacted already and will be returning. We always need more help with the CCD program and if you would like to help us out please let me know. I would ask for all CCD registration forms to be returned by September 1, 2006. My hope is to begin the program on September 13, 2006. This will give the teachers a little longer time to teach the children this year. At the beginning of the year there will be a calendar handed out to let you know when the CCD classes will be meeting. God bless you and have a good week. |
