Fr. Tom's Tomes August 21, 2005

This past Wednesday, Bishop Hogan School began with 91 students attending school. From my vantage point, I was very impressed with the smooth opening of the school year. Before we know it, school will be out for the summer. Between now and then, we will have a lot of learning and hard work going on. This past week, I met with the staff and had a great meeting. I know the staff is very dedicated to the education of the students and are interested in making Bishop Hogan continue to be the best it can be.

This school year the staff will continue to work on what is called curriculum mapping. It is a way for teachers to continually look at what they are teaching and how the children learn. This began last year and will be something the teachers and staff will be involved with from now on. What this means is that the teachers will have to have time to work on curriculum mapping. In order to make time for the teachers to do this once a month we will release the students early for the teachers to work. At this time the third Friday of the month the school will dismiss at 1:00 pm for the teachers to be able to work for 2 to 3 hours on curriculum mapping. I want to let parents know now this will be happening.

A major fund raising activity for St. Columban is the Fall Festival. Being new I have heard about it and am anxiously awaiting to experience it for the first time. From previous experience I know all parishioners need to be involved and I hope each and every one of you will participate in helping us out. From the young to the old, tall to short each of us need to volunteer to help out. There is something for each to do. If you want to sign up now to help out please see the information in the bulletin this weekend to see who to call to help out.

I believe parish fund raisers are important not just to raise money but also more importantly for parishioners to come together to be with one another and to see how we as a parish are able to work with one another. The proceeds from the Fall Festival assists all the ministries of the parish and we need to help one another. Building community in a parish is vital. When there is a project or goal we can all work together to achieve the goal.

Labor Day Weekend is coming up. On Monday, Labor Day, we will have Mass at 9:00 am. Labor Day is a day to remember all who labor. I invite all parishioners to come and attend Mass to pray for those looking for jobs and to pray in thanksgiving for those who do have jobs. Whichever situation you are in I would invite you and place your petitions before God.

May you have a blessed week.
