This weekend we celebrate Labor Day. Labor Day is a time to remember all who do work with their hands. God has given each person gifts and talents to be used to build the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. What does this mean? Each person is made in the image and likeness of God. Each one of us has abilities given to us by God. The abilities we have are not for our own but for the good of all. All we possess is a gift from God. God does not want us to be selfish in how we use our gifts for others. God wants us to be generous in giving of what we have to others. We know God wants us to be generous because of the fact He sent his son Jesus to be the model for our lives. Jesus gave all he had for us and others. Jesus went as far as giving his total life for our salvation. In following the model of Jesus we need to share all of our gifts, abilities and resources we have with others. This Labor Day I would invite you to come and celebrate Mass with me at 9:00 am to thank God for the jobs we have. It would also be a time to pray for those who are unemployed or underemployed to find more fulfilling work in their lives. St. Columban’s Fall Festival is approaching quickly. We would like to make this the best yet. We need the help and assistance of every parishioner. This year we are expanding the Fall Festival to make it a weekend celebration. Our Fall Festival will be the weekend of September 16 and 17, 2006. The committee this year is planning on having a whole hog dinner, a beer garden and a dance on Saturday night. The whole hog dinner will be from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm. Please set aside that evening and come with your family to enjoy the food, beverages and atmosphere of the supper. The supper will be a free will donation. About 8:30 pm there will be a dance for those 21 years of age and older. Because there will be beer available during the dance no one under the age of 21 will be allowed to the dance. Tickets for the dance will be $3.00 for one person and $5.00 for a couple. Saturday evening we are hoping many parishioners will come and take advantage of the supper and dance. This is a time we are setting aside for the adults of the parish and community to come and gather to have a pleasant evening. Sunday September 17, 2006, will be a time like we have had in the past. There will be live entertainment, lots of games for the children, food available and a new exciting offering of laser tag. The committee is hoping to drawn a large crowd of individuals from the parish and community. There is a raffle with the Fall Festival. This year it is estimated there are prizes totaling nearly $1,000.00. Please sell your raffle tickets to friends, neighbors, countrymen, and enemies. Don’t forget to ask everyone you come into contact with to purchase a few or many raffle tickets. There are still many people who are needed to help with the Fall Festival in setting up, operating different parts of the festival and in clean up. If you are called or asked to do something I would encourage you to give of your time and talent and to help in our Fall Festival. There will be a rummage sale at the Fall Festival as well as a Country Store. Your help in bringing things you no longer need at your home and by making baked goods of all kinds would be appreciated. Again this is a way to help our parish to reduce its debt and to have money for the operating expenses of the parish. God bless you and have a great week. |
