Fr. Tom's Tomes October 1, 2006

As was announced in last week’s bulletin I will be going on vacation from October 5, 2006 through October 18, 2006. Due to the fact I am taking classes on Wednesday evenings for the degree for being a principal I adjusted my vacation so I would only miss one class. I will be going to Oregon to visit my brother and sister-in-law who moved there last April. I will be going with my mom and a sister.

Next week Fr. Ray Luerk will be here for the weekend Masses. Fr. Ray used to be the Catholic Chaplain at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo. Fr. Ray was stationed at Whiteman during my tenure as pastor in Clinton. Fr. Ray now goes across the country talking about Food for the Poor. He will be speaking at all the Masses about this mission. Poverty is a part of our country. As Catholic Christians we are called by our faith to respond to those who are hungry. Matthew’s Gospel talks about the end of the world. In this particular description of Jesus returning at the end of time he will separate the sheep and the goats. The sheep will go to heaven and the goats will not. The sheep are those who care for the people of God. One of the ways Matthew talks about responding to Jesus is to provide food for those who are hungry. All of us are called to respond to those who are hungry.

The weekend of October 14 and 15th Fr. Robert Cameron will be celebrating Masses here at St. Columban. Fr. Cameron is a generous priest as he goes around the Diocese filling in for priests who are on vacation on the weekends. Fr. Cameron is the director of the Propagation of Faith and the Director of Catholic Cemeteries. I would ask you to please welcome both of these priests to our parish while I am gone.

This Fall we will have one week in which we will be collecting clothing for the Sisters of St. Francis on Noland Road in Independence. The Sisters will ship the clothing to other countries. The Sisters ask that the clothing be clean, in good repair and for warm climates. They do not need winter clothing. The clothing collection will take place the week of November 11 to the 19th. We do not have any room to store these items here at St. Columban before the time of the collection week. Do not drop off any clothing until the collection week.

Hy Vee is also collecting receipts of $25 or more to help with school projects. Last year we were able to raise over $2000 through parishioners, school families and friends helping to collect Hy Vee receipts. There is a box in the back of Church so you can put your receipts in there. If you want to place them in the collection basket
we will make sure they get to the collection point. The school and early learning center both have boxes for collection of receipts. If you choose you can also mail them to the school or parish offices.

God bless you and have a good week.
