Fr. Tom's Tomes October 29, 2006

ATTENTION PARENTS OF CHILDREN ATTENDING WEDNESDAY EVENING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES. THERE WILL NOT BE CCD ON WEDNESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 1, 2006 BECAUSE OF THIS BEING THE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS.

This coming Wednesday is the Feast of All Saints Day. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. This holy day is a remembrance of all the saints in heaven. Our goal of life is to go to heaven. Our whole lives should have the purpose of leading us closer to God so that when we die we are able to get to heaven. As we approach this holy day it is a time to reflect upon our own lives. Do we follow the commandments of God? Do we live the Beatitudes which Jesus gave us? Do we love God with our whole heart, mind and soul? Do we love our neighbor as ourselves? This examination of conscience should set a tone in our lives where we need to move closer to God. A Holy Day of Obligation also brings us together in prayer. There is always a need in all of our lives to pray. Holy Days allows us to come together to remember the Saints, to help us reflect upon our role to get to heaven, and offers us the grace of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This year the times for the Holy Day Masses are 7:00 pm on Tuesday, 8:15 am on Wednesday and again at 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening. Due to my attending classes on Wednesday the Mass time is changed to 8:00 pm. All who are Catholic need to go to Mass for the Holy Day.

St. Columban’s does have a parish council. The members of the parish council are Bev Thompson, John Taylor, Mary Triplet, Toby Minnis, Joe Timmons, Scott Lindley and Chuck Haney. The chair of the parish council is Bev Thompson. The secretary is John Taylor. In our meeting this past Monday evening we decided if someone would like to come and share ideas with the parish council you need to let Bev Thompson know. The parish council usually takes place on the second Monday night of the month but may be switched depending upon my schedule. During the school year with so many activities going on and since I am the principal, the meeting time could be changed. Please watch the bulletin for when we meet. It is important to know all meetings are open to the people of the parish and we will listen to all who want to come. Due to the shortage of staff members not everything which comes before us can be accomplished in a short period of time. We do have a lot of ideas and as time, personnel and finances come, we will be able to do more.

The parish council would also like to do something for the people of the parish. The council came up with the idea of giving away one turkey at every Mass for the first three Sundays of November. Since we are approaching Thanksgiving and a time to be thankful for all the people of the parish who support us, we want to give away a turkey. The way this is going to happen is that you will be asked to fill out a piece of paper with your name on it and place it in a special collection. At the Mass, the name of the person who is attending Mass will be pulled out and given the turkey. Yes, you must be present at Mass to win the turkey. We are asking all people to place your name in the drawing for the turkey.

Attention high school youth: There is a high school education program for youth every other Wednesday evening. The next evening will be on November 8, 2006. This high school youth evening is open to all who are in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. Even if you are in the Confirmation program you can still be a part of the Wednesday evening learn sessions. Come and try out the class.

I will extend an invitation to all parishioners to go to the Holy Rosary Turkey Dinner which will be on Sunday, November 5, 2006 from 11:30 am until 2:30 pm. This is the major fund raiser for the Catholic Church in Clinton. For the area around Clinton this is the kick off for the Fall season and the start of many turkey dinners there. If you would like more information you can let me know and I will help you out.

God bless you and have a great week.
